Are custom video cards really worth the extra money?

Hey guys. NVIDIA reached out to correct me that all GPUs chips supplied to the AIBs come from the same binned allocation as their own. The reason I even mentioned the NVIDIA bin is because back a Turing launch one of the AIBs had informed me of a separate bin. I don’t know if this information is dated and has changed or if it was never correct. Regardless the comparisons are what they are and the comment about NVIDIA retaining best bins should be ignored.

Umm can you check to make sure the FTW3 and Black have the same or different power limits, it might be a BIOS switch options, if they have different one then check if the FTW3 has a higher or same as the founders edition.... does the extra power limit even matter.
Something you did not talk about, how the EVGA cards have multiple BIOS switches that can act as failsafes.

I would argue that Asus, MSI, EVGA... even Zotac do their best to push the cards, whilst injecting their own aesthetic to make it theirs. In the end, however, the silicon lottery is what determines whether the card you get is as good as another from the same batch.

Try as NVIDIA and AMD may, this is something GPU manufacturers can't avoid.

Why not do a video sponsored by some water cooling manufacturer and then test cards and models from different manufacturers with exactly the same aftermarket watercooling and see which does best? Of course it could all be down to the silicon lottery (so maybe take 2 exact same cards from same manufacturer as security). That would either show who is doing the best PCB OR it would show that it really doesnt matter and you should just go for the cheapest option.

$300 premium for the FTW3 2080 TI for 3 FPS gain at 4K when gaming, seems a little steep?

Mine wasnt - ftw3 2080ti hit's 83c with 100% fan speed at a 360w load......why pay extra for cooling that sucks ? Case was define s2 with noctua fans at 100% too. Most people do not look at the wattage of the the card when looking at 100% load, its different for various games and benchmarks.

I would love to see the binned FE card coupled with an aftermarket triple slot cooler like an Arctic Accelero.

its not really that much of extra money i think that from 10-40 $ is definately nothing to seriously consider, you want to invest in a better Card the temperatures and noise alone are well worth this small extra cost.the Rx5700 custom models are really nice and i think have the best value for money for what they offer.

Silicon lottery always plays a part! That's why paying through the nose for a custom card could end up being a total waste of extra dollars when that chip can't be pushed much even though it has all the fancy power delivery/custom bios/coolers.

Hey Jay, I’ve always wanted to overclock but I’m always been concerned with temps affecting my hardware long term. What is a safe temperature for an EVGA rtx 2080 xc gaming? Any time I see 82 degrees I immediately stop because I feel that is approaching danger levels.

I purchased a EVGA 2080 FTW3 Ultra Hybrid. I hit the core with 66, power to 130 and memory to 750. The results are slightly modest as anything higher crashes. My main concern is the hybrid can not cool it quick enough without running the blower above 75 and the radiator fans above 90. Would a custom loop keep my temps below 45c they average around 65 now? I loose boost after 40,45,50,55. The hybrid just can not keep up. It's paired with a i9-9900k and switching to a custom loop is going to cost me around $600 (ekwb performance 360 and the hydro copper from EVGA). Will this be worth it?

i have a zotac 1070 amp extreme so the cooling is not that much of an issue . running heaven at stock (power and temp ) with core at + 40 and memory at 100+ really reaches a max of 60c .

.....Err also you left out that the EVGA cards have multiple BIOS switches on the board. The FTW3 should also have a higher power limit or a BIOS with a higher power limit over the black and maybe even the founder edition?

Pretty good performance but was pretty bummed out that the card was power limited to 130W TDP with the GPU barely at 70C and fan running at 65%. Found out that you can just flash it with a EVGA XC Ultra 6GB BIOS to unlock it to 160W TDP. Now happily running without throttling at up to 123% power, 1632MHz / 1947MHz boost at a breezy 75C, and userbenchmarks place it at 93rd percentile, meaning only 7% of other 1660's are faster. Haven't tried to overclock the memory yet...

Jay I am getting ready to move up to RTX and this video I was hoping would give me more of an idea what to buy than it did. I am going sli 2070 supers (I know you said its not worth it, but... I digress 😂) I will run on air for a few months then I am going custom loop. My real dilema is what card will I be able to get a good waterblock for, i know the FE card will always have wb available.

What I really need is some hard core schooling on what block will fit what cards ect, and if watercooled at what point is saving money vs performance.

Anyway, another great video and thank you for your content and time.
